In this incarnation, he makes art.
It began in 1970 in New York City. That’s when and where Grant Hayunga came into the world, and soon it was clear that his perception was attuned differently from that of most people…such is the way with the born artist. Whether manifested in art for the eyes or the ears, Grant has always created from his own blood and bones. His art, whatever form it takes, is always from the soul and for the soul. Both sub and supraliminal. Both sub and suprahuman.
Even before graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design, he was Santa Fe-bound, having been signed by Linda Durham Contemporary Art…maybe he’d been seen and called home.
Hayunga has created interconnected series of paintings, all of which give the viewer insight into his unique perspective on earth and its creatures, the spirit bound as it is in flesh.
Grant Hayunga will stop creating when he stops breathing, and not a moment before.
“I can tell by the look in your eyes that it’s going to be a wicked road ahead for you boy, and you need to keep your gaze straight ahead.”
-Townes Van Zandt to 20-year-old Grant Hayunga
